Doylestown native, Judith Sapperstein of the playwrighting duo, Sapperstein & Murway [SappersteinAndMurway.com], has created a traveling ensemble that brings live theater to audiences that might not already know they enjoy theater.
The Gypsy Stage Company begins its first annual season with a production of Love and Merger, written by Sapperstein & Murway at the Smoke & Mirrors Magic Theater in Huntingdon Valley PA, June 7, 8, 9 and 10, an amazing intimate venue.
Love and Merger is "a comedy of the scandalous type," set in the mid 1990's in a time where the computer sent the typewriter packing into the annals of history, leaving the little town of Regal South Carolina in a real pickle. The whole town revolved around the Regal Typewriter Factory, started by the town's founder, Colonel Beaumont, after World War I.Today the factory is out of business and Colonel Beaumont passes, leaving his entire estate to the town for its future, thus, in the hands of the very greedy town council. They are saved! ... or are they?
"I was very fortunate to have been part of an ensemble group in the 1980's and wanted to recreate that amazing experience for actors and for audiences today," shared Judith Sapperstein, Executive Director and Founder of The Gypsy Stage Company."Our goal is to build our family of professionally minded performers to get to know each other extremely well and be able to work together so strongly that the caliber of performance is enhanced tremendously," she continued.
One of Gypsy Stages biggest goals is to produce amazing plays and musicals with minimal costumes, props and sets to make any production work on virtually any stage or venue."Traveling well is an important cornerstone of this company and is important to the venues who invite us in," states Judith.Judith takes the "ensemble" experience very seriously, "everyone is a deeply rooted part of each show we produce," she shared."Without each and every person and their ability to know the others in the group so well, the magic of the performance would not be quite so enthralling," Judith continues.
Actor and Marketing Director Tracy Byrne chimed in, "the focus on being a family and being close, is the biggest part of what makes this experience so wonderful for me."She continues, "it's a great time for us, which translates to the fun our audiences have while watching and interacting with us."
The Gypsy Stage Company boasts the inclusion of several award winning and internationally travelled actors and a well-rounded cast of actors with a great deal of experience on stage and screen."We are still building the company, so we are looking to welcome new talent into the ranks," states Judith."We even have a magician of our own in the roster, Mr. Evan Myles, a very talented young man who himself, in addition to his magic, is an actor, a singer, a composer and a writer," Judith includes.
